Participant Spotlight 🔦

Katie Strickfaden is the Chief Operating Officer at Lakeshore Legal Aid, a not–for–profit law firm that is focused on providing civil legal services to low-income individuals, older adults, and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in the Michigan Area. She is currently leading the adoption of AI tools at Lakeshore Legal Aid.

Initiatives from the RAILS Network 🌱

Working Group Updates

Working Group 1 is currently writing use cases for AI in legal to create a resource for all. If you are in WG1 and can help write a few use cases for AI in litigation, please reach out to us at rails@law.duke.edu.

Working Group 3 has been compiling direct to consumer case studies, guidelines, and a risk/harm and opportunity matrix. WG3 is transitioning to a new small group for three months to synthesize the work done so far.

Working Group 4 is currently compiling and reviewing AI policies and related documents relevant to in-house counsel. Their second meeting will be in early November.Contact rails@law.duke.edu to join.

We now have over 80 court orders, rules, and guidelines related to AI use in our tracker, and we have added a new dashboard to analyze the data in real time.

AI News and Research 🎙️

Policy

  • The National Security Memorandum on AI aims to establish U.S. leadership in developing responsible, secure artificial intelligence technologies while protecting democratic values and national interests.

In the Courts

  • Thomson Reuters Institute and the National Center for State Courts have partnered on an AI Policy Consortium. Check out their Establishing GenAI Literacy in Courts series for practical examples of implementation. 

  • Delaware's Supreme Court just implemented an interim policy that sets clear boundaries for how judges and court staff can use AI tools - including which platforms are approved and what sensitive information must be protected.

In Legal Aid

  • The Legal Services Corporation's 2025 Innovations in Technology Conference taking place in Phoenix, AZ will include an inaugural AI Summit for Legal Aid on Sunday, January 12 in partnership with the Kristen Sonday, co-founder of Paladin. Registration is $50.  

  • Right after the LSC ITC conference, the American Bar Foundation, Arizona State University, Stanford Law School, and Georgetown Law School are co-sponsoring an AI and Access to Justice Research Conference on Wednesday, January 15,  from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. This is a complimentary event, however registration is required. Register here

In-house Counsel

  • A recent survey by the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) and Everlaw reveals that 58% of legal departments anticipate using generative AI (GenAI) to lessen their dependence on outside counsel, while 25% already report cost savings from its implementation.
